Clayton J. Jones Jr.

Clayton J. Jones Jr. is a Senior Attorney at Triangle Divorce Lawyers who helps individuals and families navigate divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support, equitable distribution, mediation, high-conflict custody, parenting coordination, and other North Carolina family law matters. With 23 years of legal experience in North Carolina, including service as a District Court Judge and Chief District Court Judge, Clayton brings a distinctive courtroom perspective to divorce, custody, support, and property division matters.

Clayton is often a strong fit for clients facing complex child custody, emergency custody, child support, equitable distribution, and domestic violence-related matters. His approach begins with understanding the client and building trust through open, clear communication. He works toward fair and practical resolutions when appropriate while drawing on his litigation and judicial experience to prepare clients for court when necessary.

Before joining Triangle Divorce Lawyers, Clayton served North Carolina's legal community as an Assistant Public Defender, Assistant District Attorney, District Court Judge, and Chief District Court Judge. As a judge, he presided over family law matters involving high-conflict child custody, complex equitable distribution, post-separation support, and alimony. His experience as both an advocate and a judge provides valuable perspective when evaluating family law disputes, preparing cases, and helping clients understand what to expect when a matter reaches the courtroom.

Clayton earned his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, with a minor in Business Administration, from the University of South Carolina, graduating magna cum laude. He earned his law degree from North Carolina Central University School of Law in 2003.

Clayton's commitment to family law is also informed by personal experience with the emotional, financial, and legal consequences that can accompany a contentious family dispute. That perspective contributes to his commitment to protecting children, helping families find closure, encouraging healthy co-parenting when possible, and helping parents preserve meaningful relationships with their children after a relationship ends.

Outside of work, Clayton enjoys traveling, attending sporting events and comedy shows, and working on his 1970 Dodge Charger. He especially enjoys spending time with his daughter, whether attending her sporting events, watching movies, or sharing a meal together.
